A night of few surprises

The 2010 Federal Budget was not expected to be a budget to remember, being announced just a week or so after the release of the Henry Tax Review. And on that count, it did not disappoint.

Fiscal responsibility and bringing the budget back to surplus within three years were the key messages. Despite global economic uncertainty, Federal Treasury expect the economy to rebound from the recent downturn.

At our recent Investment Market Update, presented to a full house of clients and associates, Olivia Hawkes from Fidelity International emphasised the value of long term investments in the share market. She discussed the necessity to look at the fundamentals of the companies in which you invest and the need to continually question why you have invested in those companies. Olivia also recommended diversification of investments using managed funds to give you access to a range of international options.

Even since the budget announcements, there has been much volatility in world markets and particularly the European economies. With uncertain times ahead, we encourage you to
contact your adviser at Saward Dawson to discuss your individual circumstances.

Career conversations

Today’s organisations are leaner, flatter and have fewer “traditional” opportunities or obvious career paths. As a result, managers often avoid career conversations out of fear that they cannot describe the next promotion or step in an employee’s career. Staff can find it easier to pursue concrete opportunities outside the organisation than investigate and understand the opportunities inside. Read more

Building works underway

We have managed to change our lifestyles to accommodate the building works that have gobbled up what was once our car park. With a new downstairs reception area, a short walk to the office for those who drive, workmen in all directions and even a dry run of our evacuation procedure, we have now acclimatised to our changing offices.

There are piles of clay up to our windows on the first floor, trenches running around the perimeter of the extension and diggers and other machinery coming and going. Look for the hard hat on our home page to follow the progress.
